Featured Remodel
- Entering the customer's home into the foyer you could go left into a den, or right into a living room that circled around to the dining room that then continued on around to the kitchen. You could also walk straight across the foyer and down a short hallway. Off the hallway a door to the left led into the master bedroom, straight ahead sat the bathroom and to the right the hallwall went on for a few feet before entering the kitchen.
- The problem? The bathroom was outdated and the homeowners wanted to freshen things up.
- After talking with the homeowners and having peeled back a few layers of the onion, I discovered that the customer really was not happy to have to share their bathroom with guests. I asked permission to go throught the house. I found that the basement area below the bathroom was unfinished, and examined the framing, plumbing, electrical and duct-work.
- After a few days I went back to the customer with a couple of ideas. I proposed flipping the tub with the toilet and install a pocket door between the two. From the hallway guests would have access to the toilet and a wash basin. From the other side a doorway was added between the master bedroom and the bathroom, the bathtub/shower side which also includes a wash basin.
- When it's just the homeowners the pocket door can remain open so that they have full access to the bathroom. One wash basin is his, the other hers. When entertaining the homeowners only have to close and lock the pocket door leading to the bath and their bedroom. They loved the idea.
- During the remodel the homeowner wondered if it was possible to make a laundry drop into the utility room below in the basement. It was not possible within the space we had to work, however we did accomodate her wish by adding the laundry drop just outside the bathroom door, in the master bedroom. Everything worked out perfectly.
